Jackie Chan has been doing quite a number of US-made movies lately, but he's got a whole stable of movies he made in Hong Kong that are being dubbed and brought over to US theaters. Drunken Master is one of these movies, and it's one of the best that I've seen. It has all of the classic qualities of an Asian movie dubbed in English, even the Brittish characters who are speaking English are dubbed a quarter second out of synch. Generally improper, but we wacky Americans seem to have a thing for bad dubbing. (See my Godzilla 2000 review for more of this.) The story develops a bit slow to begin with, but once the fighting starts, the action is fast, furious, and funny. There are definitely some good laughs in this one, as well as the sheer spectacle of Jackie doing all of his own stunts.
I give Legend of the Drunken Master a viewing value of $5.50.
