Treasure Planet

For a long time, I've been pretty anti-Disney-animated-movies. I don't like most of the things Eisner has done with the company, and I've avoided all of the Disney movies since Beauty and the Beast.
Treasure Planet is a different story, however. I've liked the original story and movie, and Lilo and Stitch made me thing Disney might stop with the cookie-cutter rehashes of old plots. So, with a more open mind, seeing the trailers for Treasure Planet made me interested. When my friends wanted to go see a movie together, and TP was one we could all agree on, it was settled.
Since it has been a long time since I last saw/read Treasure Island, I didn't have a lot of the usual book predjudice going in, and I got to take it at face value. Obviously, things are very different: Jim Hawkins is now something of a modern street punk and putting it in space makes for quite a new set of problems. However, the original pirates and swashbuckling is intact, and they really did a good job of making Jim seem like a diamond in the rough, dreaming of a better future for him and his mother. It's a good kids movie that parents will enjoy watching almost as much.
I'm pleased with some of the technical improvements as well. Disney is still mixing cel and digital animation, but they've managed to blend the two much better than in the past. Their designers came up with some great scenes and the ships are very cool, despite suffering from the always unanswered question: "How do they keep the air in?"

I ended up paying $9.50 to see Treasure Planet, and I'd almost reccomend it at that price. See it for $7.00 if you can, tho.
