If you've been checking around my site,
you already know that thing pirate will attract my attention. Therefore,
it should be no suprise that I went and saw Pirates of the Caribbean:
The Curse of the Black Pearl. Long title, longish movie, quite
enjoyable. Alright, it's not a deep and thoughtful drama, but that's
not why you see pirate movies. You see them for the action, the humor,
and the booty. Pirates delivers on all three.
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is simply great. He's got
the slightly-drunk sense of humor, a fast and loose style, and yet
he's always thinking one step ahead. Geoffrey Rush provides and excellent
edge and sinister drama to his character, and you know right away
he's not someone to be taken very lightly. The two characters make
for some great interplay and humor.
The action comes almost as fast as the humor in Pirates.
I enjoyed Depp and Orlando Bloom's fight at the beginning of the film.
Very well done with no obvious stage blows and with realistic problems
and bobbles of a real fight. Ok, ok: They probably wouldn't have fought
in the rafters in a real fight. :>
There are constant, but not actually obtrusive, refrences to
the Disneyland ride throughout the film. They're placed well, often
very funny, and not so many that you become annoyed by them. (I'm
glad they didn't follow the ride's latest incarnation, and have looting
pirates chasing women because they have platters of food.) The rest
of the film contains plenty of witty remarks and jokes, keeping the
audience laughing regularly.
I also enjoyed the movie's score. They kept "Yo Ho, Yo
Ho" but as a good joke. The rest of the score carries the theme
of the movie well. This is one of those films I think I want to see
again in the theater so that I can catch more detail than I did the
first time around.
